The innovation is in the single serving canned format. Getting the cocktail into a canned format was no small achievement\u2014it took the team at Porto-based\u00a0<a class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.taylor.pt\/us\" href=\"https:\/\/www.taylor.pt\/us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.taylor.pt\/us\" aria-label=\"Taylor Fladgate\">Taylor Fladgate\u00a0<\/a>more than a year of data-driven wrangling with local wine bureaucrats to convince them that canned port cocktails were an idea whose time had come. Alas, this fall Taylor Fladgate officially launched the world\u2019s first-ever canned port cocktails:\u00a0<a class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/croftpink.com\/croft-pink-tonic\/\" href=\"https:\/\/croftpink.com\/croft-pink-tonic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/croftpink.com\/croft-pink-tonic\/\" aria-label=\"Croft Pink &amp; Tonic\">Croft Pink &amp; Tonic\u00a0<\/a>and\u00a0<a class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.taylor.pt\/us\/port-wine\/chip-dry-tonic\" href=\"https:\/\/www.taylor.pt\/us\/port-wine\/chip-dry-tonic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.taylor.pt\/us\/port-wine\/chip-dry-tonic\" aria-label=\"Chip Dry &amp; Tonic.\">Chip Dry &amp; Tonic.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13558\" src=\"https:\/\/wine365.com\/stage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/poolside-canned-cocktail-white.jpg\" alt=\"Taylor Fladgate Canned White Port and Tonic\" width=\"959\" height=\"639\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wine365.com\/stage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/poolside-canned-cocktail-white.jpg 959w, https:\/\/wine365.com\/stage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/poolside-canned-cocktail-white-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wine365.com\/stage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/poolside-canned-cocktail-white-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/wine365.com\/stage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/poolside-canned-cocktail-white-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wine365.com\/stage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/poolside-canned-cocktail-white-175x117.jpg 175w, https:\/\/wine365.com\/stage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/poolside-canned-cocktail-white-450x300.jpg 450w, https:\/\/wine365.com\/stage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/poolside-canned-cocktail-white-270x180.jpg 270w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 959px) 100vw, 959px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey really are monumentally convenient,\u201d explains <strong>Adrian Bridge<\/strong>, managing director of Taylor Fladgate, \u201cbetter yet, they are the best way to get the perfect ratio of Port and Tonic.\u201d They are also made with Taylor Fladgate\u2019s bespoke tonic water recipe\u2014something the port house decided to do to bring down the sugar levels.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, Port, which is much more versatile than its reputation allows, is not limited to a quiet evening by the fire. \u201cWhat Port gives you,\u201d explains Bridge, \u201cis a very good base. Port has full body, good alcohol (around 20%), depth, and richness, all of which give mixologists much to work with in terms of dimension. Tawny Port\u2014What Is the Difference?<\/a><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>During the tasting trials for the canned versions, Bridge explains, they decided to go to the added trouble of <strong>crafting their own tonic water<\/strong> for the drinks. \u201cThe problem with most of the commercial tonic brands is that they sit around 30 grams of residual sugar. The one we made comes in at 18 grams of sugar. We needed a drier tonic because there is natural grape sugar in the port that supports the cocktail\u2026now we have the sweetness is primarily coming from natural grape sugars, not tonic water.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Chip Dry &amp; Tonic<\/strong> is a more subtle riff on a <strong>Gin &amp; Tonic<\/strong>; the white port lends some fruity weight and it has no bitter aftertaste. Croft Pink and Tonic is made with Croft Pink Port, a delightfully fresh ros\u00e9 port pioneered by Taylor Fladgate in 2008. It delivers more of the juicy red fruit notes you\u2019d get in a ros\u00e9 wine and just begs for a slice of orange peel. Even crafting the ros\u00e9 port raised a few eyebrows. Says Technical Director and Head Winemaker for Taylor Fladgate David Guimaraens, \u201cWe took a big risk innovating in an industry that\u2019s been around for 300 years. Some traditionalist producers sniffed at the ros\u00e9 and questioned how we could do such a thing; of course they all make one today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Guimaraens is fond of a Chip Dry White port on the rocks with orange peel. Bridge suggests popping a bit of bruised mint into the drink as well. Now, however, if you want all of that and some fizz all you have to do is merely open a can and pour into a wine glass bursting with fresh ice.
