Day #[wpdts-day-of-year start=”post-created”] of the year.

Montes Alpha Syrah

You learn best by doing, which is how I like to learn about wine. Not just drinking (though obviously that’s integral!), but whenever I open a new bottle I read up on the wine and where it comes from. Sipping wine knowledge a glass at a time is less overwhelming and more memorable. When I cracked open this Montes Syrah to eat alongside pumpkin, fennel, and sausage pasta, I discovered I’d picked up a hidden gem. It’s from the Colchagua Valley, where Chile’s finest red wines come from. In fact, it has been called the “Napa Valley of Chile” (I do always like to see wines and terroirs stand on their own merit, but an association like this can only boost its reputation). This juicy, spicy Syrah was a great example of what this valley’s vineyards are capable of. Also keep an eye out for Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenère from the Colchagua Valley.

ORIGIN

Colchagua Valley, Chile

Grapes

100% Syrah

Montes Alpha Syrah

Tasting Notes

Deep cherry-red in color, nuanced with violet. The nose is intense and complex, with ripe black fruit, fig, and spicy black pepper, intermingling with tobacco and meatiness, delicate notes of dark chocolate and a subtle touch of toast. The palate is well-balanced and broad, with incredibly smooth tannins lending structure and weight on the mid-palate, leading to a long and elegant finish.

Food Match

Highly recommended with red meats, stir-fried beef, pork chops, spaghetti with Bolognese sauce, and lamb chops.
