Day #[wpdts-day-of-year start=”post-created”] of the year.

Agricola Punica Barrua

Today, December 23rd, is Festivus! Right now, I’m sure many of you are saying “What’s Festivus?” For the uninitiated (e.g. not “the rest of us”), Festivus is a holiday popularized by the late, great Jerry Stiller on the seminal sitcom Seinfeld. Stiller’s character, Frank Costanza, was disillusioned with the what he saw as the materialism and performative nature of the traditional holiday season. By creating Festivus, Frank believed he could replace these “shallow gestures” with his own traditions – such as the “airing of grievances” and the “feats of strength”. Festivus is even innovative when it comes to decorations, replacing the Christmas tree with a bare metal pole. However, the one thing that Festivus has in common with the other holidays is the ability for its adherents to celebrate with a great bottle of wine – that’s where the Agricola Punica Barrua comes in. Crafted with grapes from southwestern Sardinia, this red has aromas of red fruits, such as cherry and strawberry. Additionally, it goes great with fresh meats – be thankful that Festivus doesn’t have any prohibitions on types of food! Although you can enjoy this wine at any time, I’m of the opinion that it’s best served before the feats of strength, but slightly after the airing of grievances – though I’ll leave the order up to you.

Tasting Notes

With a deep violet color, the wine displays clean; on the nose elegant aromas of spices, wild herbs and red fruits. On the palate, the wine is soft and elegant, a unique blend of sage, myrtle, rosemary, vanilla flavors and fine tannins. Notes of red fruits, pepper and liquorice add an interesting spiciness before a harmonious and persistent finish.
