Kicking off our 12 Days of Holiday Wine Cocktails with a classic favorite – the iconic Mulled Wine! This holiday staple is a delightful blend of wine, spices, and fruit, creating a warm, spiced beverage that has become synonymous with the festive season. Here’s why Mulled Wine is such a beloved holiday tradition:
Cozy Warmth:
Served hot, Mulled Wine is the perfect antidote to chilly winter nights. Its soothing warmth and aromatic spices make it ideal for sipping by the fireplace or enjoying during holiday gatherings.
Seasonal Spices:
The heart of Mulled Wine lies in its seasonal flavors. Cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and star anise not only infuse the drink with rich, festive aromas but also evoke the essence of the holidays. These spices are common in other holiday treats, tying the drink to the broader flavors of the season.
Rich History:
Mulled Wine has historical roots dating back to ancient Rome, where spiced wine was enjoyed during colder months. The tradition spread across Europe, becoming a cherished custom in many countries, particularly around Christmas.
Customizable and Simple to Prepare:
One of the best things about Mulled Wine is how easy it is to make and personalize. From adding oranges and cranberries to experimenting with different spices, you can tailor this drink to suit any taste.
The combination of its history, cozy warmth, and festive flavors makes Mulled Wine a quintessential holiday cocktail. It’s no wonder it continues to be a staple at celebrations around the world. Cheers to starting the season strong with this timeless favorite!
mulled wine recipe
ingredients
1 bottle of red wine
¼ cup brandy
8 whole cloves
2 cinnamon sticks
2 star anise
¼ cup of sugar, honey, or maple syrup
Optional garnishes: oranges, cranberries, etc.
instructions
1. Combine ingredients in a large pot. Pour the wine and brandy into a large pot or saucepan. Add in spices and fruit as desired
2. Heat Slowly. Heat the mixture over low to medium heat and stir occasionally. Do not boil the water as the heat can burn off the alcohol and change the flavor
3. Simmer & Infuse. Let the ingredients simmer for about 15-20 minutes to allow the spices and fruits to infuse. Taste occasionally and adjust sweetness or spice depending on your desired preferences
4. Strain & Serve. Remove the pot from the heat and strain the mixture through a fine strainer to remove the spices and fruit pieces
5. Garnish. Add a garnish if desired. Some common garnishes include cinnamon sticks, cranberries, orange slices, and star anise. Serve in a glass of your choice
