How to Pair Wine with Mac & Cheese

Who doesn’t love a nice ooey, gooey bowl of Mac & Cheese? Mac & Cheese is rich, creamy, and the perfect comfort meal. In addition to lots of cheese, butter, and milk, there is often a nice saltiness to it as well. Knowing this you are going to want a wine that can balance out or cut through the richness of the Mac & Cheese without overpowering it

Sparkling Wine – Champagne, Prosecco, Cava

My first instinct when pairing wine with Mac & Cheese is a sparkling wine – think Champagne, Prosecco, or Cava. Sparkling wines bring bright acidity and lively bubbles that work beautifully with rich, creamy dishes. The crisp acidity and effervescence cut through the richness of the cheese, creating a refreshing balance, while their lighter flavor profile complements the dish without overwhelming it.

Recommendations:

  • Alta Vista Brut
  • Caposaldo Prosecco
  • Domaine Carneros Brut
  • Poema Cava
  • Taittinger Brut la Francaise

Chardonnay – Unoaked or Lightly Oaked

Chardonnay is another excellent match for Mac & Cheese, especially when you choose an unoaked or lightly oaked style. A heavily oaked Chardonnay can feel too full-bodied for an already rich dish and risks overwhelming the flavors. In contrast, unoaked or lightly oaked Chardonnay offers a touch of buttery texture that complements the creaminess of the cheese, while its bright acidity and lighter profile keep the pairing fresh and balanced.

Recommendations:

  • Cakebread Chardonnay
  • Louis Jadot Macon Villages
  • Montes Alpha Chardonnay
  • St. Francis Sonoma County Chardonnay

Sauvignon Blanc

Sauvignon Blanc might not be the obvious choice for Mac & Cheese, but it can be an unexpectedly delightful pairing. Its bright, zesty acidity cuts through the richness of the creamy sauce, while its light, refreshing profile allows the flavors of the dish to shine without being overpowered.

Recommendations:

  • Bollini Sauvignon Blanc
  • Craggy Range Sauvignon Blanc
  • Infamous Goose Sauvignon Blanc
  • Pighin Sauvignon Blanc
  • Salviano Castello di Titignano Sauvignon Blanc IGT
