How to Make a Christmas Sangria

Red Christmas Sangria is the ultimate holiday party drink, combining the deep, fruity richness of red wine with the festive flavors of the season. This cocktail is typically made with a mix of juicy pomegranate seeds, cranberries, orange slices, and crisp apples, infused with a splash of brandy or orange liqueur for warmth and complexity. The addition of cinnamon sticks or a pinch of nutmeg gives it a cozy, spiced aroma, evoking the essence of holiday cheer. Served in a large, beautifully garnished pitcher, Red Christmas Sangria is not only visually stunning with its vibrant hues but also a versatile and refreshing choice for gatherings. Its festive ingredients and bold flavors make it a drink that celebrates the spirit of togetherness and holiday joy.

Ingredients

1 Bottle (750 ml) Red Wine (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, or Grenache work well)

1/2 cup Brandy or Orange Liqueur (such as Cointreau)

2 cups Cranberry Juice (unsweetened is best)

1/4 cup Simple Syrup (optional, adjust to taste)

1 Orange, thinly sliced

1 Apple, diced (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp for a crisp flavor)

1/2 cup Fresh Cranberries

1/2 cup Pomegranate Seeds

2-3 Cinnamon Sticks

Club Soda or Ginger Ale (optional, for topping)

Suggested Wines

Montes Alpha Merlot

St. Francis Sonoma County Merlot

Norton 1895 Coleccion Cabernet Sauvignon

The Seeker Cabernet Sauvignon

Alta Vista Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

Instructions

  1. Prepare the fruit: Slice the orange and dice the apple. Add these, along with the cranberries and pomegranate seeds, to a large pitcher.
  2. Mix the base: Pour the red wine, brandy (or orange liqueur), and cranberry juice into the pitcher. Stir well to combine.
  3. Sweeten it up: Add simple syrup to taste if you’d like a sweeter sangria. Stir thoroughly.
  4. Add spices: Drop in the cinnamon sticks for that warm, holiday spice infusion.
  5. Chill: Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for at least 2-4 hours, or overnight, to let the flavors meld together.
  6. Serve: When ready to serve, pour the sangria into glasses filled with ice, making sure to include some fruit in each serving. For a bubbly twist, top each glass with a splash of club soda or ginger ale.
  7. Garnish and enjoy: Garnish with additional fruit slices or a sprig of rosemary for an extra festive touch.
