Today is St. Joseph’s day, a.k.a “La Festa di San Giuseppe” (The Feast of St. Joseph). If you are not a Catholic, you may be wondering why you should care about a special day for St. Joseph. May I ask you, then, just exactly why you were wearing a hideous green shirt, drinking green beer, and eating corned beef and cabbage two days ago? Yeah.
Growing up half-Italian (obviously, not the half that gave me my last name), March 19 was a celebrated day, during which we feasted on a range of pastries and pastas, with figs and fava beans as familiar fixtures. It was, and still is, a great excuse to gorge on zeppole – scrumptious fried dough balls that swim in powdered sugar. This year, St. Joseph’s day lands on a Friday, which is significant because during Lent, Catholics are not supposed to eat meat on Fridays — except when La Festa di San Giuseppe lands on a Friday! So today, it’s OK to grill up a juicy steak, and I can think of no more fitting a wine to both match that steak and honor St. Joseph than San Guido Sassicaia — the original Super Tuscan. Buon Appetito!
