What’s Your Name Again?

Prosecco is made from the Glera grape. But did you know that in the past, the grape was called Prosecco? In 2009, the wine was officially declared “Prosecco” and the grape “Glera.” This way, winemakers outside of Prosecco’s zone (Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia) could no longer call their sparkling wine “Prosecco.” It’s similar to how the French protect the name Champagne as a place of origin.
