With one month left of summer on the horizon, the countdown is on for everyone’s summer vacation. While not all of us are lucky enough to escape the hustle and bustle of the city  – we’ve put together a list of Coastal Italian wines to enjoy whether you’re summering off the coast of Italy or on the roof of your city apartment.

Sardinia and Sicily are two of Italy’s best hidden wine-region gems. Sicilian wines are typically acidic, refreshing, and have a lighter body. The high elevation coming from Mount Etna provides the perfect growing conditions to produce fresh and juicy wines. Sardinian wines are impacted heavily by the islands’ terroir – wines are complex in character and have a healthy dose of minerality and salinity.

Check out 4 of our favorite coastal Italian wines below!

Feudo Maccari Saia Sicilia 2021

For the fans of Sicilian food (my personal favorite is Pasta alla Norma), pick up a bottle of Feudo Maccari Saia Sicilia 2021and enjoy with your dish of choice! Made with the native Sicilian grape Nero d’Avola –is a light bodied red wine with notes of mature fruit and spice. Like most Sicilian wines, this red is acidic and lighter in body while still providing complex notes and freshness. You can’t go wrong pairing this red with any Sicilian delicacy!

Feudo Maccari Olli Grillo 2023

Sicily is an island with unique geographic features, namely, its own active volcano! Mount Etna is a key player in the formation of the island and has been recorded erupting as recently as February 2021. While Etna is showing no signs of cooling down, that doesn’t mean you can’t sit back and relax. Try chilling out with a glass of Feudo Maccari Grillo Olli 2023 – made from Grillo grapes – that originated on this fiery island. This wine is medium bodied with notes of flowers, yellow peach, with hints of sweet almond, and yet still maintains the mineral notes gained from the Sicilian soil.

Agricola Punica Samas Isola dei Nuraghi 2023

If you have dreams of sandy beaches and crystal clear water, pick up a bottle of Agricola Punica Samas Isola dei Nuraghi 2023! This crisp and refreshing Sardinian white wine is made from majority Vermentino grapes, which is a signature for Sardinian whites. Crisp and well balanced with refreshing notes of citrus, sage, and a long mineral finish, this wine will have you looking for the soonest flight to Italy!

Agricola Punica Barrua Isola dei Nuraghi 2020

Sardinia is a historic Island with numerous large megalithic structures dotting the island left over from the Nuragic civilization. We recommend reading up on the rich history of the island with a glass of Agricola Punica Barrua Isola dei Nuraghi 2020. This wine has ripe aromas of red fruits, black cherry, sage, myrtle, rosemary, vanilla, pepper, and licorice that come from the Carignano grape – a regional specialty. This spicy and complex red is a key example of a Sardinian wine.
