Description
Crognolo, the first wine of Tenuta Sette Ponti. Born in 1998 from the wine project of the Moretti Cuseri family. An elegant Sangiovesebased supertuscan, endowed with a unique identity: between enhancement of territory and vines, excellence, rigor and innovation made from a tradition capable of evolving. The best selection of a historic variety of Sangiovese from a unique clone found in the Vigna dell’Impero 1935 and multiplied in the estate’s Sangiovese vineyards. A small addition of Merlot to give roundness and complexity. The ruby red color is a prelude to an intense and complex nose, rich in red fruits such as cherries and berries, floral notes such as violets, herbs and spicy notes, giving class and elegance. Structured, complex, mineral and round, it suggests excellent aging capabilities. The name comes from a wild plant “the cornus” that grows abundantly on the estate.

This super Tuscan has been aged for you and is ready to enjoy now, yet will also benefit from laying down another 5+ years, making it an ideal “cellar starter” at a bargain price. The 2017 growing season in Tuscany was a wild one, full of extremes, and the quality of wines was dependent on the exact area of the vines, the producer, and luck. Crognolo happened to be in the right place, made by the right producer, and kissed with good luck — it’s a ripe, delicious red with good structure and plenty of depth.

Bright ruby red. Complex with a prevalence of small red fruits and floral notes. The body is beautifully balanced with a long finish.
Delicious with full flavored meats and roasts.
Clay and sand soils as well as Tuscany’s special stony galestro limestone, combined with ideal sun exposure and a climate tempered by the Mediterranean, provide an ideal climate for the Sangiovese grape. Low yields of excellent-quality hand harvested fruit ensure a rich and concentrated result. Following hand sorting and destemming, grapes are fermented in a combination of temperature-controlled and lined open-top tanks. Lots are blended first when the wine is placed in barriques and again at the first racking. Crognolo is aged for 10 – 14 months in French Allier barriques and 5 – 6 months in bottle.
Enjoyable upon release, Crognolo benefits from short- to mid-term cellaring and will continue maturing 8-10 years beyond the vintage date.
Tuscany experienced a fairly frigid winter, in absence of snow and rains below average. The vegetative growth has been anticipated by a surprising spring, very hot and untimely. Given the hot temperatures, the flowering took place quickly and without interference. The season continued with high temperatures for some periods of the summer, alternating some rains. The vineyards, which enjoy a good maturity and an excellent balance during all the phases of the year, well endured the dry season. Sangiovese, which could be prone to damage caused by drought, did not suffer thanks to irrigations, taking water from the two lakes inside the estate. September started with sunny days alternated with some rains which brought to a very good technological and phenolic maturity which was able to guarantee structured and elegant wines, faithful expression of the vintage.
