Every four years the anticipation of the Olympics sweeps across the world. With the 2024 summer games in full swing, we have been on the edge of our seats watching these athletes compete. It got us thinking if each sport was a wine, which would they be? We rounded up some of our most competitive picks that are going for gold. Even Simone Biles agrees , “A glass of wine never hurts on my day off.”

Gymnastics
Cabreo Il Borgo

Gymnastics is arguably one of the most anticipated Olympic sports and for good reason. Have you seen Simone Biles hit the vault? This sport is comprised of the vault, uneven bars, the balance beam, and the floor exercise. The routines are complex, intense, and insanely impressive when accomplished flawlessly. Cabreo Il Borgo represents a perfect match for gymnastics, characterized by complex and charming aromas, it stands out in a crowd with fresh, crispy fruit, and a silky finish. This wine is a careful blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese, which respectively gives softness, strength and elegance in each glass. It is a persistent wine, which is what a gymnast needs to compete at this level to win the gold.

Basketball
Michele Chiarlo Il Principe Nebbiolo

Some refer to Nebbiolo’s as “wine for kings”, which seems like a perfect fit for this year’s Olympic basketball team—LeBron James, Steph Curry, Devin Booker, Kevin Durant, and Anthony Davis all on one team—sounds like royalty to us!  Michele Chiarlo Il Principe Nebbiolo would be the perfect teammate to Team USA with intense yet harmonious notes of violets, red plums and fine spices. This wine is a slam dunk and will be shooting 3-pointers all day long. It’s sure to box out the competition and impress even the toughest critics.

Swimming
Medici Ermete Phermento

Vibrant, bubbly, rich, and persistent on the finish, the Medici Ermete Phermento is the perfect pairing to Olympic Swimming. These swimmers have been blowing bubbles in the pool since they were just little kids. Even now in the Olympics they still blow controlled bubbles to help with breathing and endurance as they compete in a range of breaststroke, backstroke, butterfly, and freestyle. This is the perfect match to the Phermento as it is a sparkling Rosé, and the bubbles are fine, rich and persistent on the finish. In addition, a dip into the cold Olympic pool is just as refreshing as a chilled glass of the Phermento. Bubbly and exciting, both Olympic Swimming and Medici Phermento are a perfect duo.

Diving
Bouvet Ladubay Saphir

Clean, crisp, and explosive – the perfect way to describe both Bouvet Saphir and Olympic Diving. Bouvet Saphir is a sparkling wine with crystal-clear fine bubbles and aromas of white flowers, peach, acacia, honey, and hazelnut. Balanced and fresh, just like the Olympic divers!

Tennis
Michele Chiarlo Le Madri Roero Arneis

An intense, vibrant white wine is the perfect match for Olympic Tennis. Highly respected wine critics have called Roero Arneis one of the most delicious white wines from Italy as it is refreshing, clean, and crisp — yet so much more. Arneis has a more intense aroma, more body, and richer flavors. Michele Chiarlo “Le Madri”  bursts with vibrant aromas of peach, honeydew melon, tropical fruits, acacia flower and a hint of hazelnut. Just like this wine has intense, vibrant bursts of flavor, the game of tennis also has intense bursts of action. Their hits are clean and crisp just like Roero Arneis. Both will leave you in awe!

Beach Volleyball
Chateau d’Aqueria Tavel Rosé

If beach volleyball was a wine, it would be the Chateau d’Aqueria Tavel Rosé. This Rosé grows in fine sandy soils, which is a perfect fit for the sandy courts of beach volleyball. This wine is punchy with aromas of strawberry, raspberry, and a kick of pepper. The winemaking technique of this Rosé is extremely technical and complex just like the game of volleyball. In beach volleyball, players are not allowed to touch the ball twice consecutively, and each team can only hit it three times before sending it back over the net. This Rosé also offers complexity as Grenache Noir, Syrah and Mourvèdre give exceptional color and tannic structure whilst Clairette, Bourboulenc and Cinsault complete the blend beautifully, bringing a generous variety of aromas and a fresh finish. This Rosé is so delicious you’ll be diving for more!

The summer Olympics are coming to a close, but the athletes continue to impress us. If these wines were competing, we think they would win gold. These wines are delicious, not only in the summer, but all year long as well! Check out all these wines available for purchase on our site – Wine365!
